Fireworks Should be on the 4th of July

If elected Mayor, I am going to make an immediate change. As long as I am Mayor, the fireworks and any city sponsored party celebrating Independence Day will be held on the 4th of July, not the last weekend of June.

I know Kingston has not done so because of a lack of interest in competing with the Saugerties Fourth of July Celebration. With due respect to Saugerties and my many friends who live there, I see nothing wrong with a little competition. The fireworks should be on the 4th of July because that is Independence Day. Having them on a different day, takes away from the importance of the holiday.

fireworks could have been on July 3 at least. Many people have to work the day after these fireworks. Most people have off on July 4.This is just another another example of the incompetants that run this city.

The City should simply re-brand the whole thing and call it a "Summer Festival".

The real damage done when having Independence Day Fireworks a week before July 4th is what our children learn from this confusion.
They see that convenience comes before the legacy and reminder of the deep meaning that the date of July 4th is forever tied to our remembrance of America's incredible beginning and independence.

Is it true that Mary anne Heppner is running for aldeman in the 7th ward?

5:14, yes it is true that Maryann Mills Heppner is running in 7th as a DEM. She is the sister of Dan Mills and the wife of Fred Heppner who worked for County Dpw and was fired for stealing gas caught on camera doing so. He then worked for DPW for years after and was always involved in shady activity. I will be supporting Kurt Dankelman in the election, we dont need anymore of the good old boy associates in the council, it is time for the old to go and in with the new!

I am with you. the 4th of July is the 4th of July, just as christmas, veterans day and Thanksgiving have their days.
I hope that you run for the Republician line for mayor as the committees choice is way out of line. If she want my support she must change her platform.

Yes Mary Anne Mills is running in the 7th ward. She is not using her married name, Heppner. Don't know why?

Her husband fred Heppner is retired from the City and is in business for himself. Maybe nobody will notice fred getting lucretive City contracts because of the last name being different.

Who the heck cares about competing with other municapalites. It is about celibrating our Independance from the tyrant King George. We have to stop being political correct. Kingston was sacked and burned to the ground by the British for the victory of Saratoga. General Vaughn lead a force of 1200 Kings regulars to destroy the Capital of NY. We have more to be proud of than any other City in the Hudson Valley , this City gave its all to establish this Great Nation. I agree with my cousin Ralph. We are sending the wrong message to our childern. It was sacrifice, and the love of Liberty, not money from sales, that my family celibrates.

So maybe we should have our "Fireworks" on the weekend closes to the anniversary of the "Burning of Kingston" I think it would be in April.

The Late Carmine Liberta of New Paltz GOP fame, ( 25 years Vice Chair of Town Committee )kept the NP Memorial Day parade ON MEMORIAL DAY, May 30 for 47 years, before we lost him.
THAT is only one reason we named the Bridge over the Wallkill River in his Memory !
A Great American,
A Great Republican
A Korean War Veteran,
A GREAT PERSON !!!

Holidays should be on the one day of the Holiday!
July 4th easy to remember, right ? Kinda rolls right off the tongue,,
Sheeesh, it aint rocket science, it is R E S P E C T !

Rich, I too think that the fireworks should be on the 4th of July....makes sense doesnt it? Also, I feel compelled to weigh in on the race that is looming in the 7th ward. I am sure Mary Mills is a nice person, the problem is she is married to a local contractor with a shady history during his tenureship as a city and county employee. In fact, he WAS caught stealing on camera at the county facility. He is close to a current assistant superintendent Ed Boyle, another contractor on the side, who was just caught on camera stealing a weedwhacker at DPW facility. Ed Boyle claimed he was borrowing the tool, however it is in the new handbook that was issued by the city that employees are subject to termination when "borrowing" tools that belong to city. Why was Eddy not fired? Mike Schupp seems to be selective when enforcing rules at DPW. You see, this is why we need to be REALLY CAREFUL when hiring dept. heads and when we pull the lever for people running for office. Will Mryann Mills be able to to distance herself from the dysfunction and do the right thing even if it means calling out people she and husband are close to when wrongdoing occurs? History says it is really hard to do so! I am going to vote for Jody Edinger or Kurtis Dankleman, they have no ties to the good old boys, period.

Quite honestly, I welcome Kingston to have their celebration on the same night as Saugerties. Maybe the Kingston trash will stay in Kingston, and not dilute our show with their obnoxious behavior.

This year up in Saugerties was rife with jerks.

The city has a Dietz Stadium Maintenance worker to the tune of over 90 grand plus benefits per year, the son of a former alderman.
So why an Independence Day celebration cannot be moved back there to make it more family oriented is not understandable, except from the angle that shooting off fireworks there is not the safest venue to do that in. What about a toned-down celebration that has pyrotechnics that are not shot off in the air? Sparkler shows and other entertainment? It's been done before, it should be tried again. Oh that's right, the law firm wouldn't be able to donate to fireworks, but gee, I wonder if Catholic Charities(or even the WGHQ Happy Cristmas Fund, or a church doing active work in the community) could do some actual good with an extra 10 grand per year(?)
